California Is Coming for Your Tires | with Marc Morano

Steve welcomes ClimateDepot.com publisher Marc Morano to discuss California’s push for stricter efficiency standards on replacement tires. Morano argues the policy could reduce consumer choice and raise costs, while state officials say more efficient tires can reduce fuel use and emissions. California has been developing replacement-tire efficiency standards under a program established by state law.

Morano: “Unelected bureaucrats in California are going to now ban inefficient tires, and they’re ‘sheltering us from higher costs’, they assure us. So I marvel sometimes at how much these bureaucrats care about us. I mean, they really went out of their way. They’re thinking 10, 15 years in the future, about how we’re going to be driving, and you have to marvel at that.

This is the California Energy Commission. It voted unanimously, so you think this must be a good idea. There was no dissent. Unelected bureaucrats voted to essentially start banning tires. Now, if you don’t have the proper rolling resistance, what does that cause? Apparently, it causes inefficient wind resistance and inefficient gas mileage. So they’re hoping that by banning these tires, which they deem climate evil, essentially, it’s the equivalent of taking nearly half a million cars off the road.

They don’t have to remove the cars. Now, they’re just going to remove the tires!
